Diwali

Many of Room 10 celebrated Diwali and shared their stories with the rest of the class. Here are some stories students have written.

On Saturday night it was 9:30 & time for my bedtime. When I got in bed I heard fireworks. I looked outside to see the fireworks. NOTHING! It was silent!
I went back in bed. BOOM! POP! I only saw one little firework. Kayla’s neighbours were were celebrating Diwali. She couldn’t sleep like me! Well I heard a baby go (well I think) YAY! Or YA! Or AY! Either one of them and I got to sleep about 10:30.

Diwali is a festival of lights. A long time ago during Diwali a prince and princess called Ram and Sitta ran out of a forest. Ram rescued Sitta from Raven the evil king. Everyone welcomed them back by lighting fire on a special candle called diva. That’s how Diwali started. And everyone wears new clothes, says prayers and makes sweets etc.

Diwali is an Indian festival that lasts for five days. During the festival there are firecrackers, divas, and rangolis. Divas are tiny steel bowls that are lit with fire. Rangolis are patterns made out of coloured powder. Many children in Room 10 were having lots of bad sleep, because of the fireworks. But I was lucky because there were no fireworks in my area.

A MarshMallow Sandwich

Room 10 made this fabulous tasting treat. Why don't you give it ago.

You will need:
A Marshmallow
A Plate
A Microwave Oven
A Packet of Chocolate Biscuits (the kind that have chocolate on one side are best)

Get one chocolate biscuit.
Put it on the plate with the chocolate facing up.
Get one marshmallow.
Put the marshmallow on top of the choclate side of the biscuit.
Get another chocolate biscuit.
Make sure the chocolate on this biscuit is facing down.
Put it on top of the marshmallow.
Put the plate with the marshmallow sandwich on it into the microwave oven.
Cook on High for twenty seconds.
Take the plate out of the microwave.
Let the sandwich sit for twenty seconds.
(This is because food cooked in the microwave oven keeps cooking for a little while after you take it out of the oven).

Mmmmmmmmm. More, please!

Other things you can do:
If you can't eat chocolate, use plan sweet biscuits.
Cook the marshmallow sandwiches in a frypan or on a solid plate over the campfire.

Science…

This term we are learning about experiments. One of the experiments we did today was an experiment on explosions. We used mentos, coke and a glass tube. We put the mentos in the coke we had to move far away because if we didn’t we would have got squirted by the fountain of coke.

We enjoyed it because it was funny and a really cool experiment. It was funny when a girl from our class stepped in it.
